The ORIGINAL SPOON THEORY

SPOON THEORY:

In Spoon Theory, it is understood that people have a limited amount of energy (limited amount of “spoons”) to get them through each day.

Spoon Theory was introduced in 2003 by Christine Miserandino, lupus warrior and writer, in her essay entitled "The Spoon Theory" (https://butyoudontlooksick.com/articles/written-by-christine/the-spoon-theory/).

Over the years, Spoon Theory has been adopted by many people in the disability and chronic illness communities who now call themselves Spoonies…

SPOONIES:

Spoonies are people who identify with Spoon Theory.

Spoonies make difficult energy consumption decisions every day, because they know that they have fewer “spoons” to spend than what would be required to get everything done.

Anyone can be a Spoonie who wants to be… Really!!! Because, everyone has a limited amount of energy.

The goal of every Spoonie is to get to the end of each day with a bit of leftover energy, with a few LEFTOVER SPOONS…

SPOONS:

In Spoon Theory, “spoons” represent the different amounts of energy required to perform a variety of tasks.

One “spoon” equivalent is the amount of energy needed to simply lay in bed or sit quietly.

For other more energy demanding tasks, of course, more “spoons” are required.

Over time, Spoonies have come up with charts to help them better manage their “spoons”…
